A few years ago I started running to get in better shape and ultimately help me hike better. I realized that I'm not hiking that much as I'd like, so I'm trying to make time to get some better hikes in. It's definitely easier to run during the week, but Sunday afternoons are good for a hike. Off trail and since I'm not hunting, not worried about being quiet... hit an ice covered rock face that kept me from the ridge... but it was good to get in the woods and head up the hill. Mission Accomplished and stress test complete. No chest pain for grandpa 😎

Last 2 tenths of a mile was 4 to 5 beats away from MHR and nearly vomited at the end 😁

Zone 1 & 2 Warm Up
2 Mile Max Effort Sprint
Trainer Ride Cool Down

Best mile since starting back 3 and a half years ago...
MHR for me is 176.

Chilly 5k this morning at 8:30 pace.

Time to start ramping up the mileage here soon. Still haven’t figured out which marathon I’m going to sign up for but I’m eyeballing a couple in March/April.

Throwing around the idea of competing again. Recent weight cut nuked my strength but I think I can rebound pretty quick. Took a 425 squat yesterday that felt like it was going to staple me but video showed a pretty smooth rep to comp depth. First heavy squat single I've taken in over a year. Bench is still chugging along, haven't hit a heavy single in over a year but feel like 365-375 is probably there. Deadlift is still trash, but 440 on a stiff bar is moveable with room to go up. Looking at possibly competing in the 242s in the summer or maybe a push to cut down to 220. I still don't have anything for the guys on the roids but I haven't competed in 2 years. Miss the environment, and I want 1300lb total.

Recently started the conjugate method of powerlifting and enjoy taking heavy sets of 5s and triples often. Keeps training from getting stale for sure.

My hiking has definitely scaled back since I started running.

But I do miss a good hike. I’m going to a 3 day per week running schedule this year. I’m going to make sure that I get one hike per week in.

You are the man!!

Thats impressive no matter what age.
41 years ago in preparation for Dive School in Little Creek it was done with ease, now not so much. I can't maintain that pace for very long at all and I took today off to lick my wounds 😅

I'm thinking prior to caring for a family member at home, the past year I may have been over training, and the 5 month break has helped in digging out of the recovery hole, which shows via resting HR. This whole past year it has been in the low to upper 40's but now I'm waking up to the upper 30's since I've cut training hours from 14-20hrs per week down to ~6hrs per week. Definitely losing endurance but the top end has improved a lot.

Got in a 40 minute easy trainer Warmup, a 1.5 mile sprint, and a 35 to 40 minute cool down.

Pretty sure it’s just a groin strain. Going to attempt a 4mi recovery run today and see how it feels. If it gets worse I’ll quit for now. Training block begins end of the month so I’d rather be fresh for that than worry about mileage at this point. I shouldn’t lose too much fitness and I’m sure I can find something in the gym to do.

Pretty sure I felt it when I was running in CLT and bolted across a cross walk to beat the traffic 😒

Easy recovery run. Switched back to maximal shoe today just to help the joints. Oddly, no pain while moving, just mostly feel it while at my desk or getting up/setting down. Going to keep it light and easy this week, maybe shorter easier runs spread out over more days, and work on some Copenhagens, etc to help strengthen hip abductors and focus on that.

One day I’ll hit those paces 😂
You’ll get there! It just takes a lot of time and effort…
After throwing in the towel on IM Fla it has been a quest of mine since July to break 8 minute miles consistently.
Basically Fast Twitch vs Slow Twitch training, and until this past July, for 3 years I’ve pretty much focused on large volume, “Slow Twitch,” LSD (MAF) for endurance. For me, to gain one is to sacrifice the other, and I’m chomping at the bit to get back to some large volume training but for now it’s just not feasible since I'm caring for a sick family member, so I’ll continue to hammer out the short stuff until I can go long again.

@T-Rock is a machine. No way I could keep up with him.

But you will get better and it’s fun to watch your progress. When I first got back in to running a couple years ago, running a 10k in one hour was a struggle and long runs were 11-12 minute pace.

Now I can do 10ks at 8:15 pace pretty easily and do 15+ miles runs at 9:00 and feel fine.

Right now my beginner gains are noticeable on almost every run. Even today’s run, I was making sure not to overload the hip abductors, running at what felt effortless? And it’s 2min faster per mile and 10-15bpm slower than what giving it all I had 2 months ago.

Haha! Sure wish that was the case but it's not coming easy at all. I think it's likely the other way around. On your slow run days you'd have me anaerobic in the first 50 yards 😁

I get frustrated trying to match what I've done in the past, especially the longer run and bike pace. Guess that's the depressing part of getting old, that and recovery takes so much longer.

Hindsight is 20/20 but if I could change the past I would've never allowed myself to gain up to 260, nor would I have married someone 15 years younger who drank like a sot which reeled me into that lifestyle, and I would've never stopped training.

Endorphins soothe the soul 😁

Too many shoulda coulda woulda's but all that can be done now is move forward and use the self inflicted past as valuable lessons 😎
