Consumerism

I believe a lot of this stems from social media, advertising, and how we're groomed from a young age to "want more". The "keeping up with the jones" mentality is out of control.

they've gotten better at it for sure, but we old folks remember the Sears catalog from summer to Christmas and all the toy/cereal ads with our Saturday morning cartoons.

ETA Also, greed and covetousness are as old as mankind.

I read that and have spent the last few minutes trying to think how deeply it affects me. I had to consider why I made purchases.

the article really seems to focus on purchases that require the consumer to display them as a status symbol. I can’t think of anything I have bought because I cared what people thought of it or me.

i prefer General Motors.....but I don’t know how that becomes a status symbol. My newest one is 25 years old.

Idk. I just don’t make purchases based on that article. I have definitely seen it become worse over the years.
