Colorado 50/50 Split in ‘28

Help me understand this. If I’ve been applying for a 20 point unit and gaining a point each year. If I had 6 points with seven entries, with point creep, I’m probably 13-15 years from that tag.

If they start squaring points in ‘28, what does that do? I’ll have 9 then, but squared plus one entry from the application, I’ll be entered 82 times. However the folks that were already al over 24-25 points will push the barrier for entry up to 626.

Does this scale? If they hadn’t started squaring points I’d be applying with 10 entries in a 20 point unit, knowing I’m just gaining another point and getting a year closer. About 10-13 years left. Now that is squared, is that still 10 years or what?

I believe the squaring applies to the “bonus points” part of the draw, which is how Montana does theirs. Preference Points means that those with the highest amount of points will get the tags. Bonus Points are more like a random draw; everybody has a real chance to win the tag, but those with more points have a better chance of being drawn.

Thus, you may get your tag sooner as you could be drawn during the bonus point draw without needing the max amount of points.

50% is random draw and a first year applicant could get a trophy unit, and the other 50% are points based?

Why square? Is it an attempt to make the required number so high that folks start cashing in points on lesser units just to get a tag or quit “buying points” and not even applying in hopes that after time the total number falls rather than creeps?

Because by squaring the points having more points will give you exponentially more “names in the hat” so that it’s not completely random. 1 point- 1 entry. 5 points- 25 entries. 10 points- 100 entries, and so on. That won’t guarantee that having more points will get you the tag but you’ve got a much better chance.

The short of it is that high point holders get screwed on this new system.
The real shame of it is there is no change to the resident/nonresident split.
