Blew out my first primer

Went out to get data on my new to me 6.5 creedmoor. I tried a variety of powders. I used w760 data as it is supposed to be equivalent to h414. Max charge was 46gr. I started at 44.5 with .5gr steps. When the chrono registered 3,000fps I should have been suspicious but I finished that group which was under .5” at 100y. I missed seeing the ejector swipes on the headstamps of the brass.

The first shot at 45gr and I got a rush of wind and a smell I wasn’t used to. I knew something wasn’t right. Sure enough blown primer. Have to pull the other loads but I believe I’ll start at 42.9 and work to 43.8.

I’m not 100% sure w760 and h414 are exactly the same, otherwise they’d be called the same thing. I was hoping to get the 2900fps published speed, not 100fps faster!! Reloading is always a never quit learning event.

I hate that for you. The dangerous part yeah….but sounds like you were finding a sweet spot too. I know I would first be concerned with the danger but in the back of my head be pouty about it.

Hopefully dropping it down a notch will still give you good results. Seems like your sweet spot with that load will be pretty close to where you are. Hopefully you found a spike and going down a touch will take you back to good pressures.

You never know…sometimes the velocity can stay pretty good when backing down.

Good luck…..let us know what the results are.

The burn rate for those 2 powders are similar.

Where did you get your load data from?

What bullet and weight?

Did you follow the data for the correct bullet weight?

I like 41.5 grs of H4350 under a 139gr Scenar. Have shot it out to 1K yards.

I am assuming you are using a lighter bullet with that kind of velocity

Load data came from the latest hornady manual for 129gr interlock. Charge weights were for w760 I loaded h414 in lieu of. I was able to get a couple good loads from h4350.

New brass or how many times fired used brass? Brand?
Virgin starline. I was way over maximum after checking hodgdon data. Lesson learned for me. This ain’t my first reloading rodeo, but I certainly learned if it ain’t listed for a specific powder, I won’t be loading an “equivalent”

Yeah….thats a bit hot.

Wouldnt be surprised if you worked up to the hodgeden max and still had more before pressure signs.

Never substitute powder charges from one to another, regardless of where they are in the burn chart. Too many times you will have issues.

I will say this and that is please be careful. On a positive note over the years shooting a .308 I have found that the discovered low node has generally resulted in the tightest groups. More isn't always better.
