Bear Hunting, after the shot?

This is my first year with a bear tag. I’ve got one near by that has messed with my deer feed the last two years and this year was trashing my bird feeder.

My question is.
Is there anything special that had to be done after shooting a bear? Do you call in and tag the same way, or is there another process to it?

  • safety first - wait to stop shaking before you get out of stand
  • find it/track it (have dog, will travel)
  • as stated, make sure it's dead
  • mark your tag
  • gut if needed
  • get it out of the woods
  • call it in before processing
  • skin it
  • butcher it
  • eat it
  • depending on size, some may have to go into freezer or canning jars,,,

same as deer and turkey

Because you got the bear tag you will get a packet from the WRC , it will ask you to and show you how remove teeth for ageing the bear has a envelope in it already address and with postage paid drop the teeth in it you have to include some information on it, they will send you a hat and a letter telling you the age of the bear its not required that you do this. If the biologist happen to have a check station near you it can be interesting to take it there the biologist will gather alot more information on the bear and they will still send you the hat.

keep your eyes open - always

I had shot one of my bears and had to wait as a couple of others were still around, decided to finally go get my bear, had to drag it a little way, gut it - all the while looking over my shoulder as i watched one other bear 70 yards or so away. While the gun was close, i kept my machete even closer while the gutting was happening.
i hunted alone, no one to help drag and too danged heavy to load on the 4 wheeler by myself, like a garbage bag full of jello

Damn that thing is a tank[emoji1787].
Id line up some help to drag

If I’m able to drop it, we’ll be 50’ + it’s run from my house. I’m planning on quartering out bc i don’t have a skinning pole to lift that thing.
