Bear dog boondoggle

Twelve Pointer
My buddy and I left 4 am Friday for Sylva to pickup a couple of 4 year old dogs another buddy got from his Maine buddy. We drive back the 8 hour trip and about 45 minutes from home a large bear crossed a few hundred yards in front of us. I slow to about 45 and the dogs that had been quite the whole trip rattled their box.
Can't wait to put them on the ground and see what they can do. Suppose to be trail dogs. Got some peanut out today and a trail cam. Gonna run some this week.
I don't envy anyone who has to drive in the triad area. I hate that traffic.

Well, that was a disappointment. Turned new dogs loose around 6 where the bear had left at 12:30. They left blowing and I didn't pack to them wanting to see how they would do. They trailed 3/4 mile and swim the swamp. Didn't want to pack across 200 yards of waist deep swamp. Had to drive 20 minutes around. They seemed to be walking it and stop and bay. When we get around, one dog pops out in the road. No bear. The other dog is still baying. We get close and she has quite and back tracking. Time we drive back around, she come out at the bait pile. Don't know what happened to loose it, I don't think we would had I packed to them.
On the way around the swamp a bear crossed in front of us. We were going to run that one next and couldn't get that one going either and it was only 1 1/2 hours old.
Momma said there'd be days like this.
Haven't give up on them yet. Try again Saturday.

Have the new dogs been around that kind of water before? I just asked because I have dealt with it before. As far as leaving one that is stopping on the ground I don't know if I could tolerate that. I say give them a little time. Could be just everything being new . Had that happen several times.

Not sure what north Maine woods is like. I trust the word of who we got them from. Like I said, haven't given up yet. I believe all would have been good had I packed early.

They may not be well conditioned to our heat yet.
