Barrel Temperatures

Headed out west for first Prairie Dog adventure this spring. Just curious about what is too hot for a barrel to get. I have a small temp scanner I’m planning to take, any suggestions as to what temps to stop shooting a gun at? Taking 22lr’s, 22mags, .223 and 243. All but one are blued, one 22 mag is stainless.

I think you will have a hard time heating up a .22 or even a .22 magnum.

tough to heat up a bolt gun unless you are really getting after it pretty well.

mid you cycle through the guns a magazine at a time, I think you will be fine. Shoot a magazine of .22lr, the. .22 magnum, than .223 and maybe the .243.

Is the .223 the ar variety by any chance?

I wouldn’t go throwing thirty round dumps through it. Maybe load up 10 rounds at a time?

The 223 is a bolt gun. We debated on taking AR’s but decided to with the bolt actions. After doing some more digging and reading seemed 120-130*F is a good point to lay aside and switch guns.

120-130 is not going to be hard to get in centerfire rounds.

shoot 3-4 Rounds and you will be at 130-140.

I'd make a few shots with 1 rifle, then a few with another if it was me

and consider fluted barrels if I was gona do that trip much

in my Idaho days i'd shoot several shots with the .222 Rem, then several with the .219 Zipper then several with the .218 Bee.
