Anyone going to the Dominican Republic?

Is this just coincidental or is there someone taking out Americans down there. Eleven deaths in the last year seems a little excessive.

We actually caught a cruise out of there about 25 years ago. I think the tip I was never going down there again was when the '66 ford truck pulled up to the plane that had the ladder attached to it like you used to see in movies in third world countries and that was how we disembarked.

Then we were escorted to the ship by convoy and you could see police stationed along the way at strategic points. I said right then not only no, hell no.

If you read the circumstances around the deaths and the similarities. It appears to be a small terrorist cell is operating there.

The one issue that I found peculiar was a couple died at the same time but their official cause of death differed.

Wife and i used to go several times a year...stayed at various resorts.....easy to get to and very reasonable at all inclusives....we will not be going back though. ...same with mexican resorts....we are getting older, and there are plenty of places here to enjoy...plus, i hate not being able to carry in those places....the thugs know tourists will not be armed....easy pickins.....last time we were in santo domingo we decided to ck out the town..went into a couple of little shops etc...i noticed a dude following us, and finally approached him....turns out the resort had sent him to follow us to make sure we were ok.....dont need to be anywhere like that

We went last year; had a good time; but there are plenty of other places to go that I enjoy a lot better. Glad we went to check it off the list; but will not be going back.

My passport isn't current and since I am retired I have absolutely no need for it to be.

read ANOTHER article this morning about an American woman left for dead down there...in her hotel basement back room....and she KNEW her attacker was wearing a uniform of the staff.
She had left her room for some ice.
Yet, nothing is done, and the resort hasn't paid her a dime.

I grew up in a 1-stop light NC town, went to college in a no-stop light NC town. After college, I joined the Navy to see the world. And I did; I've been from one end of this planet to the other. But now I look at the situation in the world, and I just don't want to leave the USA (ok, maybe Canada; Banff was pretty breathtaking). There's nothing I've ever seen anywhere that can top Yellowstone, or the Grand Canyon, or Zion National Park. The other day I was fishing on my kayak near Morehead City, and was thinking how people come from all over just to do what I'm doing right now. We in NC are blessed with natural beauty from one end of the state to the other.

Be heading there come September unless something major changes. I'm not worried about it. Way I look at it, a couple hundred thousand tourists go there every year, something is bound to happen to a very small percentage of them.

Thats my thought 11 people in a year with thousands going sounds normal. How many people die on a carnival cruise every week. I had a a ball in DR. I went to a resort and stayed on the resort no reason to leave it.

Thanks Dobber. I was wondering if it was just limited to Americans. Those numbers are still too high for me to think it is all natural causes.

From what i have heard and read, not just one resort, but several, and some of the high end ones, the rooms have a bar in the rooms, problem is the bottles are open in a style similar to the picture, which gives anyone access to put whatever in the bottles.

I remember my friend's older brother going there, stayed six months or so,
wait, he was a Marine and was sent from Camp Lejeune, NC to assist in
restoring peace after an attempted takeover of the government.
My G-Fath. vacationed in Hati for six years, oops, he was also a Marine and
was there from 1916-21.

Our niece and her husband have been to the DR two times and loved it,
are going back again this summer despite warnings/advice from the family.
I need to go to Haiti and meet with the descendant of the Haitian "Voodoo"
witch-doctor who put the curse of the goat on my G-Fath. because he shot
the "WD's" goat.
I have a shoe box filled with those old picture post cards with my G-Fath. and his
detachment there at Cape Haitian, and convicts in black & White prison suits.

15 years ago traveling there on other folks dime i thought it was the best destination around.
we worked in one "industrial" park that was situated such that when you exited you had to turn or you'de be in the ocean.
folks were friendly : you could trust their committments, no issues.
I would trade DR trips for mexico trips any day.
that being said i have no clue the current situation but if it is worse that the hellhole i just visited in nassua i wont be going.

No, I won't be visiting the DR. There are a bunch of places right here in the US of A that I haven't seen yet. The "world" is no longer American Tourist friendly like it once was so even though I have held passports since I was 19 none have even been validated by a foreign country and I don't see that changing anytime in the future. But thank you very much for asking....

The media is only focusing on the dead Americans. They think it has something to do with fake liquor.
