Anybody hunt for arrowheads?

Used to when a kid. Rained on plowed up fields were mostly where I had success but that was down east where the ground didn't bear rocks. Up here in the Piedmont you have to have a sharp eye to pick one out of the ground clutter.

I've have a few.

Plowed fields are where I find them here. Most of the really old stuff on hilltops near springs, newer stuff in the river bottoms.

Really nice collection, creekhobo! I think that Morrow Mountain in the first frame is the biggest one I've ever seen.

I hunted for them and found a bunch of them when I was growing up in Johnston County..I found a few in SC while living and hunting down there for many years. I had a nice collection of arrowheads but when I left home my Mom decided everything that I left behind needed to be throw out, that was a long time ago now..

I'm jealous of the Savannah rivers

A friend of mine found a few nice ones on our farm last year. He hunts them alot and has a nice collection. He was telling me about the Indian history around here (Wilson Co) and it was really interesting. I've looked a few times since then with no luck. I did find a really nice one at wedgewood golf course after a bad shot into an area they had recently turned, and figured maybe somebody lost it, but my buddy said that area has a huge tribe and the arrow head looked like thiers. That was the only one ive ever found

Found a bunch when I lived down on the Suwannee, every time I turned dirt on my place there'd be a few. I got into it pretty heavily and at one point it was hard for me to drive past a plowed field after a rain...

Firefly, sounds like we had the same Mom. When I came home the first
time after getting married I was going to take my few "treasures" back
with me.
I had my rock collection, several neat things, one was a spear head.
Also, what I'm sure was a meteorite about baseball size.
My G-fath gave it to me,her father. He showed me where he found it,
and how. I also had several shoe boxes of baseball cards, most in great condition.

These cards went back to the late 40's-50'sand 60's.
When I looked for them Mom told me she threw all that
stuff out. Said when you joined the service, and got married I
thought you were through with you kid stuff.

Awesome stuff gentlemen! When my dad was a kid he found a ton around lake norman as it was filling in. On our recent trip to North Dakota he found one out there as well. I personally have never found one but I also havent looked that hard to be honest. My grandfather made an awesome wall mount with some of the top quality ones. Ill try and take a picture of it sometime.

Yep, sounds familiar indeed. My Mom also threw out my baseball cards and I had most if not all of the old Yankee team including Mickey Mantle..If I had the Mic's card today I could get good money for it, and possible Yogi Berra as well..My Mom thought the same thing that I was through with kid stuff. In my arrowhead collection I also had a spear head and a tomahawk head..Several other things of my boyhood went missing as well, thanks Mom..

The recent rains have uncovered some pretty good finds in the Uwharries for me. Here are some of the better finds. I need to go back and look again when these rainy days have passed.

Usually find them in plowed fields or creek/river banks. They would camp on high spots near creeks/rivers and hang out near the water source during the day. It takes a trained eye to spot them, remember youre usually not looking for a full point just an edge or tip. once you start finding flakes of flint then you're in the right area. Haven't looked much the past several years but used to quite a bit. My dad has an awesome collection. Here's mine and the wife's small collection. The wife's first point was a hardaway-dalton, top center to the left a little. Dated at like 7-9000 years old....edit: 8000 B.C, so I guess older20180523_195931.webp....

Most of mine have come from the farm here in Randolph county and a tract my family owns in Montgomery county. The Montgomery finds are on a small cleared plateau next to a natural low water crossing on a creek. The crossing must have been popular because I have found arrowheads and using a metal detector found horseshoes and old brass buttons there.

That is pretty neat there, the river crossing....Don't want to highjack the thread but we have some family land that ive been told the union soldiers camped at for awhile, need to get me a metal detector

Heck, I couldn't find one if I fell face first in a bucket of em. But I do have a few friends that have some fantastic collections. One thing I pick up from them is to search fresh, rained on turned land. Doesn't matter if it's been plowed, stumped or what, just that the soil has been disturbed. And, as has been said, don't look for the whole thing as you mostly only see a small part.
On a side note, I did get to witness a couple of my friends excavating an old stash just a couple if months ago. I'd never heard of it and don't think many have been located, but it felt special to even see. They pulled out somewhere in the neighborhood of 180 rough napped heads from one spot maybe 3 feet in diameter. When they explained it to me I realized just how rare a find that is.
Another side note. Be aware that it is illegal to remove artifacts from some areas. Parks, game lands, wildlife property etc comes to mind. If the land is government land, it's pretty much off limits.

Arrowhead experts, what say Ye?

Dug a hole to bury a goat today, and found this 4-6 inches deep. Only piece of it's color we've ever found, and we've dug several holes since being here. A couple to bury animals, most for post holes.

Every hole we've ever dug, we've found fist and foot sized rocks. Plenty bigger, very few smaller, but mostly those.

As far as we know, the field has never been plowed. For years it was part of a family farm and has held horses.

The hole we dug today was riddled with smaller triangle rocks. Nothing like we've found before. No big rocks, at all. It's located in the part of the field with the best view.

Was this the beginnings of an arrowhead? Any chance we found a "practice" station for knapping? Or a discard pile for messed up arrowheads?
