Alaska public lands closed to non residents

There’s not a lot of articles that sum up what’s going on but Alaska is proposing to close the north slope to non residents. This move is not rooted in any aspect of the North American model of conservation. If you plan to hunt in Alaska or not you should voice your opinion as this further erodes hunting for all Americans. It will not be long before similar things start knocking on your back door......

the issue is that Alaska still has a heavy emphasis on subsistence hunting and fishing

all rural (and heck some city folks) Alaskans can file for subsistence rights,,,

as Alaska's population grows, you will see more and more closures to folks from "other than Alaska"

just the way it will be

Except the management plan and harvest numbers do not support this this closure.

Caribou population estimate 244,00
harvestable surplus 10,000-14,000+
average subsistence harvest from 2000-2019 10,000
2000-2019 non-local harvest 250-500
total of less than 11,000 a year which is on the very low end of the management objective.

maybe they're planning for the future resident population increases,,, or worried on the caribou die offs that have happened,,,

don't know,,, haven't studied it
