Advice needed

I’m ordering a CVA Optima 2.
Last minute decision to get a ML, coming from a flintlock….
Was going to put a cheap bushnell Dusk and dawn 3-9 on it. Any better cheap suggestions?

Also planning on using hornady 240 gr sabots. Would you suggest this?

What powder would you suggest?

What mounts and rings would you suggest?

Thanks

The Bushnell is actually a surprisingly good scope at the price point. The bullets/sabots are the XTP hp? If so, YES they are a great choice. Lots of powder choices out there. BH209 is the cleanest but also VERY pricey. Pyrodex Select (90 gr by volume) with a 240 gr Hornady XTP was my go to for many years. When 777 came out I went to 90 gr of that as it's a little cleaner and doesn't stink so bad.

If you go the Blackhorn route, make sure the breech plug is designed for it and use regular 209 primers, not ones designed for black powder. If you go 777, use the 209s for black powder and swab between shots to help reduce the crud ring . Swabbing is not required with Blackhorn. Pyrodex is fine especially for the $ compared to the others.

240 XTPs are good. If they load too tight, pick up some Harvester Crush Rib sabots.

Good point about the primers for BH209. I had a misfire using cci primers and after switching to cheddite primers i haven't had another issue.

I’m shooting 240gr XTPs over 100gr of 777 with good accuracy out of a CVA Wolf. I’ve got a cheap Weaver 2-7 on there, I paid like $75 for it several years ago and it’s the only cheap scope I’ve liked enough to still have.

I got 777 and 209’s and the 240gr xtp.
The optima came with rings installed.

So for 100 yd zero what drop at 150,200?
How high at 50?

With 100 gr of Loose 777 and the 240 gr XTP your velocity is approximately 1925 fps at the muzzle.

With a 100 yard zero, you're looking at the following for trajectory, velocity, and muzzle energy.

50 yards-
roughly 3/4" high
1750 fps
1630 FPE

100 yards-
0.0
1585 fps
1340 FPE

150 yards-
roughly 4" low
1430 fps
1100 FPE

200 yards-
roughly 12.5" low
1300 FPS
900 FPE

If you're using pellets, your velocity is less, so your bullet will drop quicker.

Take it from someone who once tried to skimp on a scope for a muzzleloader…don’t do it! In the end you will likely have way more money in it than had you paid once and cried once just saying!

Thanks for this information, exactly what I was looking for before going to the range. I’m using 90gr pellets. I’m finding the hornady ballistic challenging for accurate muzzle velocity.

I have the optima v2 , the konus that came on the gun is a good reliable scope that I’ve killed a few deer with however I had a old nikon buckmaster laying around that retains light a little better I threw on it this year , I was shooting 295g hollowpoint power belts but because of lack of blood issues I switched up to tc xtp 240 grains this year (they came with the gun) I never lost a deer with the power belts but a couple ran and didn’t leave much blood after exit , most mushroomed up inside cavity. I shot a buck yesterday with the tc bullet. Unfortunately the only shot opportunity I had was a straight on facing shot which I blew straight through his heart but no exit. 20 yd run with 100 grains of pyrodex pellets & federal 209 primers . I may throw another 30 grain pellet next time I line it up.

Don’t cheap out on the scope. For some reason, muzzleloaders are rough on scopes.

Get a mid tier Burris or try to find a used Nikon or Leupold. Spend an extra $100 now and save yourself time and headache.

As for the 240 XTPs, hard to beat that bullet. I personally like the 300s but killed quite a few with the 240s as well.

BH 209, somewhere between 90-110 gr, 240 XTP bullets or Barnes TMZ or TEZ. CCI mag 209 primers and a Leupold 3x9 with fire dot. Like others have said get the right breech plug.
