11-30 Bloody Saturday

Up a tree on Jordan. Forgot it was Saturday when the duck hunters are out. I went deep towards the lake. A boatload of duck hunters are hitting their calls hard. My new hunting jacket and pants were delivered yesterday so today is my first hunt with them. Warm and cozy so far. I really like the chest pockets for your hands.
What pants? I need some new warm ones…

Five weeks post-surgery, still in a sling, and still hurt some, and not sleeping at night. I’ve been splitting time between sitting with my 73 y/o dad and sitting with my 15 y/o son for the last few weeks in the evenings since powder season came in. I’m savoring what I know is probably one of the last years that I get to enjoy it with my son for a while. He’s got a little girlfriend and I found out yesterday that she hunts. So, I know it’s a ticking time-bomb before he’s gone and it will probably be a while before I get him back. If I’m lucky, I’m wrong in this assumption. He slept in this morning so I’m sitting in a warm truck overlooking the backside of our home farm sipping caffeine and taking in the view armed with a pair of binoculars.

So far I’ve seen 18 or 19. Two bucks and the rest does and little ones. The hard frost is thawing on the leaves and they are starting to fall like snow in the sun. God’s paintbrush sure is beautiful this morning. Y’all have fun out there and take it all in. Stay safe and good luck.

Well the father in law has had the opportunity to shoot 9 different deer so far and 3 of them were big old hoochie mamas. He's a certified deer watcher now. He's still old school "don't shoot a doe" mentality even when there's no shortage of deer.

So four “does” came in….I saw there was a youngin’ among them. I guess the first one I shot I lost track and shot the wrong one. Let’s just say thank goodness our tags are antlered and antlerless, not male and female

The other is a big ole long faced nanny doe though.
Been there done that.

Just had a doe and fawn pass through at 8:30. Both gave me easy standing broadside chances with the rifle, but I'm waiting for a closer opportunity with the handgun. Right now, the rifle's for "just in case" a good buck steps into long-range view.

Damn thermocouple keeps shutting off my heater. Cleaned it out before I used it this year. If it keeps up I'm about to replace it with the 180 degree radiant one.

Broke the first rule of still hunting. Don't stop in the open. Was checking my GPS and then saw a doe slipping through. She didn't bust but decided to skirt around me. Really thick area so no way for me to snap shoot her. Good sign though.

I. Slept. In.
Got up at 4 and went “meh”.

Didn’t want to sit in that same holler again today. Buck sign everywhere up here is dead. Some new travelers showing up. Hoping next weekend gets hot again. December 5th is my favorite day of the year to hunt the mountains.
