Wow! Sugarcoating is right. So prior to taking the dog to a shelter, she takes it to the vet? That tells me right there she was expecting to find some kind of ammo she could use against the hunter. Sounds like an emotional anti who got in over her head. “Unfamiliar with tracking collars but was concerned about it.” Classic case of an anti not knowing what something is, but assuming it must be bad. Then she throws the collars away at a gas station, including the identification collar. Sounds innocent enough 🤔We would have hunting dogs end up at the park all the time at mount Mitchell. We’d tie them up, give em water, even had a dog house with bedding to keep em warm n dry in bad weather. Call the number on the ID collar. And this might come as a shock, but if the owner didn’t answer, they’d eventually show up Bc the tracking collar did its job. This lady and her court case groupies are more full of crap than a Thanksgiving Turkey.

Good job TWRA and DA office for following the evidence OF A CRIME and not letting that BS get swept under the rug with some of the "she didnt mean to do it or its too hard for us to make a case". NCWRC could stand to take notes from that IMO ....

It’s been in all the papers here. Those west Knoxville snoods think they’re above the law. Farragut is the buck head GA and Brentwood TN of the Knoxville area.

^Shame that ATL has ruined such a fine state...course you could say that about most states as well.

It really is.
The further away from ATL the better as far as I’m concerned.... most of that state has no use for ATL....

Just curious, what are the laws and penalties in NC for doing something like this to a hunting dog? Misdemeanor, felony? And is it mostly the local Sheriff that enforces these laws?

"Tampering with a collar" is written into the wildlife regs, so usually it's the GW who gets called. There's no reason the sheriff or municipal can't get involved in cases where the dog is stolen. A lot of the times, the line between misdemeanor and felony gets crossed, based in the value of the theft, and a lot of these dogs can be real valuable.

North Carolina General Statutes Chapter 14. Criminal Law § 14-81.

a) Larceny of horses, mules, swine, or cattle is a Class H felony.
(a1) Larceny of a dog is a Class I felony.
(b) In sentencing a person convicted of violating this section, the judge shall, as a minimum punishment, place a person on probation subject to the following conditions:
(1) A person must make restitution for the damage or loss caused by the larceny of the livestock or dogs, and
(2) A person must pay a fine of not less than the amount of the damages or loss caused by the larceny of the livestock or dogs.
(c) No provision in this section shall limit the authority of the judge to sentence the person convicted of violating this section to an active sentence.

Not sure of all the definitions of all the felony classes but if it is a felony do they lose their right to own a weapon and vote?

I would think a felony is a felony does not matter if its for bank robbery or larceny of a dog.
