Last minute planning, buddy called me up and has a charter booked for Lake Erie for Sunday and needed one more person, quick little groveling and pouting to the wife and am all set. Walleye and steelhead are the target fish, and prefer a few more steelhead than walleye for the grill.
Pictures shall be taken

Steelhead may be hard to come by, but walleye should be very abundant.

I grew up in Buffalo, NY

I assume you're launching from the Canadian side since you're from Ontario?

Good luck. Cant wait to see some pix!

yes launching out of Wheatly just east of Pelee, did voluteer work years back for a fishing derby, always lots of steelhead, guess water temp will be key though. Even tried my hand at canning some - nothing pretty but they ate well

Good luck, Dobber! One of my "wish list" items after retirement is to visit one of the Canadian canoe trail parks and fish for lake trout and pike. I watch a lot of the Canadian bushcrafter's YouTube channels and they sure make it look like fun!

Fished up there a bunch growing up.

Remember catching a bunch off Kelly's Island.

Fun days of all you want 10 lb eyes.
At the end it was hard pressed to pull a 5 pounder out.

My Grandparents would take me fishing up that way right on the Canadian border , we would stay in old quaint cabins right on the water, don't know if any body has heard of it was Black Lake, caught a lot of small mouth, northern pike ,walley, yellow perch, and an occasional muskey. Good Luck

I took a lot of trips to Sandusky, OH to take a charter out of there. Why the preference for steelhead over walleye for the grill?

steelhead is MADE for the grill,,,,walleye not so much (to me),,,,walleye more of a fish fry critter

steelhead is about like salmon in that regard

Thanks. I didn't really think about "grill" when I posted. I was thinking about taste. Fried walleye is just about the best tasting fish you can eat.

gotta buddy who’s from up there just got back. 6 of’em went out with a charter. They were 4 short of their 6 man walleye limit, caught two steelhead and lost two at the boat.

Too much cool water right now for the steelhead, need some of it warm up and then they will be in tighter groups and easier to target.
Walleye is a better eating fish fried and certainly will be keeping the cheeks, but i have a trip booked in September where i plan on eating my body weight in eyes between chasing moose

My sons and some of our friends did a bunch of canoe trips to Quetico Provincial Park when the boys were younger. Great trips, great fishing (when the weather was right). Rugged country, get your paddling and portaging muscles in shape before you go! Here's a little fish porn.

Used to go to Black lake every year as a kid but that was over 30 years ago. I remember catching nice crappie on rocky points almost every cast during spawn in mid May. Caught lots of nice northerns as well. I’m from the Buffalo area and caught plenty of eyes and SM on Erie as well

It's been like 40 + years for me would love to go back one day and fish it again, but man it's a long trip from here. Dought it is the same at all ,I would imagine a lot more populated now.

I've fished charters in Lake Ontario a few times during the summer and did well with Steelhead and Salmon. Once the thermocline sets up, they are fairly easy to find with down riggers. Good Luck!
