Damned Psychotic Nerve....

Thanks everybody, some good advice. The same thing happened a couple of weeks ago on my LS but it wasn't nearly as severe or long lasting. I think it's happening because I'm becoming a lot more sedentary in this heat. After 20+ years of running across rooftops in these crazy temps I don't handle it nearly as well as I use to. That leaves me sitting on my butt in the a/c most of the day, not a good thing at my age......

I've decided that in the morning I'm going to check into our one and only local gym. Aside from 3D and walking through the woods I'm not getting the exercise I use to and that may be a big part of my problem. If they have a sauna and a whirlpool I'm in, both would do me a world of good.....
Thanks again guys....
My surgeon told me to never get on a treadmill again because the movements aren't natural. He recommended a recumbent bike to strengthen legs and thighs. For the last ten years I pedal that thing for forty-five minutes, increasing the tension every five minutes, three or four times a week. It helps me.

My wife just went to the Doc about a similar nerve (runs down the side of the leg). Doc told her it could be sciatic nerve or another nerve I can't spell, but the treatment was the same. Drug call Gabapentin (sp).
THIS is why I'm here today and I'm convinced of it. I never had back pain before or after the surgery, but incredibly horrible sciatic pain. Saying incredibly horrible is an understatement actually. Never in my entire life have I felt like checking out, but that pain.... that pain had me telling the surgeon if he couldn't at least change the pain I'd be jumping off a bridge or something and meant it 100%.

Positioning or any other medication didn't solve the problem. Gabapentin made me forgetful and loopy for a good solid year post surgery, but it helped me tremendously. I'm still not back at 100%, but can say I'm at 95%.

More power to you finding relief. I wouldn't wish the pain I had on anyone.

I will say that dilauded/hydromorphone was the ONLY pain medication that'd afford me any relief from the pain. It'd knock me right on my arse. That and the gabapentin made me a zombie for nearly two years, but I'm just stupid now. The zombie is gone...

Been down for 2 weeks with it. Had back issues all my life, first time it ever went to my leg. MRI shows degenerative discs, but not enough for surgery. Doc set me up for a specialist at the Spine Center, first available appt Sept 7. What a load of.... Got better the last few days due to staying on my feet, and drugs.

Mine flared up and I drug my left leg around for a while thinking it would get better. It didnt. They do not un-pinch.

A good chiropractor kept me off the operating table for 7-8 years until I finally had to have surgery at L4/5 and although it did seem a success I waited way too long and I still have residual numbness in my left foot.

Not sure a good chiro dr could have you shooting comfortably by this weekend though buddy....

It a literal pain in the arse for sure
I experienced the same thing, still have issues after surgery.

Sounds like me I had to make some lifestyle changes.. no lifting heavy weights, cut way back on the mnt biking. No jumps or harder trails. If I notice any problems starting I take it real easy till they are gone again.

It had eased off a bunch later on in the morning, enough that I had little to no pain at all working outside. It's back with vengeance tonight no matter how much stretching or meds I try. I'll be at the VA tomorrow and/or be on crutches tomorrow night. Can hardly stand the pain enough to get around the house right now....

Please start the process now about seeing someone for this. For two months before I had surgery they kept me knocked out. I was in so much pain I only got up to go to the bathroom and wouldn't have done that if I didn't have to. Good luck on getting relief.

There's minimally invasive technique used to deaden the nerve if it can be isolated. They can sometimes use steroids to help, if that's not effective they can burn the nerve to temporarily or even better kill the pain.
It's not always a surgical fix.

Helluva night. I was sitting at the chiropractor's office here in town at 8AM....they're closed on Friday. Go figure.
I guess it's heat, ice, and Ibuprofen until I can find a professional solution....

Good luck buddy......I suffered for about 6mths with these folks around here until my disc finally blew out and I couldn't walk. Luckily a Dr in Raleigh seen me and did surgery the next day.

This is definitely sciatic. Luckily my Sweetie was an Orthopedic CMA for over 17 years at Carolina Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in New Bern, same people who rebuilt my shoulders. She can make a call and get me in through the back door to the place on Monday.....

It's not going to solve the problem but it helps me sleep through some rough nights is a muscle relaxer called soma. Fast acting within 30 minutes after taking it and it's mostly gone by morning

Yea, it is damn invasive when they are sticking needles in you asking you "is that the one causing the pain"? And you writhing in pain saying I don't think that is the one and they say well we have to be sure before we laser it.

@Hunterreed can that be found OTC or is it prescription? All I've got is lidocaine patches and Ibuprofen, they ain't doing squat, and now the other side is getting aggravated from my hobbling around. I'll be in a dern wheelchair by the end of the day I guess...

On a positive note I'm having a blast taking the pain and my frustration out on telemarketers this morning.....

Pain meds don't touch it and I've tried several. Standing more, stretches, and walk on a level surface using short strides is about all you can do.

Soma..Carisoprodol is a prescription muscle relaxer.

"Soma Oral: Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Pictures, Warnings & Dosing - WebMD" https://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-12153/soma-oral/details

Flexeril..Cyclobenzaprine, is another prescription muscle relaxer.

"Flexeril Oral: Uses, Side Effects, Interactions, Pictures, Warnings & Dosing - WebMD" https://www.webmd.com/drugs/2/drug-11372/flexeril-oral/details

I've used both. Can't say if one is better than the other. Both make you sleepy.

I had mine burned and it worked for almost a year before little pain came back.

Well, I'm trying to get up every once in awhile and move around slowly because damn. I don't know how people lay around idle all day, pain or no pain I can't do it. A couple of times I've slowly walked over the range, flung a half dozen arrows, and walked slowly back. If I'm gonna hurt anyway I might as well get a little enjoyment out of it...

Soma is a prescription drug, carisoprodol I think must be the generic version which is what I get. For me there is a big difference in it over flexeril. You know when the soma starts working it almost makes you want to lay down within 30 minutes after taking it. It's a tablet like an aspirin that you can break in half if a whole one is to strong. I like that it works fast you don't have to wait hours like you do with gabapentin. And I think that's probably why it doesn't really affect me the next day it wears off overnight. You can't consume alcohol and take one or you won't be able to walk

See that's the thing. When mine was at its worst the pain would become excruciating to the point of passing out while standing. So I'd sit or lay down... the problem with that was that's when the real pain... the Real pain would begin. By the time my body adjusted to that indescribable pain I'd either had convulsions or vomited. Most of the time both and multiple times. That's why I wouldn't wish that crap on my worst enemy. More power to you getting relief and beyond it.

Damn @UncleFester!! Was that when you were taking Dilaudid? Damn!! There was a time when I took Dilaudid, 2-4 mg. It didn't really help as much as I thought it should.

Brother I'm sure sorry to hear you had to go through that. The pain I'm having is a pure sumbitch but that makes me know it could be worse and I'm lucky it's not gotten there.....
I'm eating max dosages of Ibuprofen, using Lidocaine patches, and I slept on a pad on the floor with my legs up on my coffee table most of the night. Weird I know but I managed to get a little rest....

Yes dilaudid was the only thing that'd help at all in the short term. Gabapentin was absolutely a major factor in my recovery. That coupled with me doing exactly what my doctor said to do.

I won't lie I thought after seeing my dad's experience with back surgery that I was completely ruined. My dad never understood the word stop though. At the time I didn't understand what back pain was about. I would goad and chastise him about laying around. "Daddy you've just got to make yourself get up and move..." little did I know. Me giving him a hard time about it without understanding is one of my greatest regrets. He passed before my back troubles got really bad. Those back issues were what ultimately lead to his death. It was a domino effect that led to poor diet, strokes to death. To this day if I think on it I'll get choked up about it and would give anything if I could just apologize to him.

Due to my issues I now have an extremely high tolerance for pain. It's not a brag in any way. From a health standpoint it's not a good thing at all. I have to have my wife monitor me of sorts to help me realize I'm going to far with something. A little over three years ago I had an ATV accident that resulted in broken ribs, punctured lung and a bruised heart. During my stay in ICU everyone kept telling me that I was about to experience some of the worst pain ever. I was fine and kept telling them they'd lost their minds. All that was nothing, not even on the scale of those back issues. They forced me to stay in ICU well between them and my wife's threat of gelding me..... when they finally let me go I was immediately back at work like nothing had happened. That's not a good thing and I know it. I'm very sensitive to anyone having issues remotely close to what I had. I mean it when I say I wouldn't wish it on an enemy.

For what it's worth, I was told never use heat, as it draws blood to the area and promotes swelling. Always use ice.

If you don’t get some type of treatment eventually nerves will be permanently damaged. Even under treatment I lost 90% feeling in my left big toe. I was also advised to not use heat and if you stay on anti-inflammation meds long enough they will damage your kidneys and liver. Spinal injections help for a week or so, other than surgery one of the pain blocker drugs is about the only solution. I’ve never been stoned on pot but wife said that’s how I acted for six months. I never asked her how she knew what being stoned looked like lol. I’ve heard that acupuncture works but have no personal experience with it.

I'm dealing with what I hope is just a badly pulled muscle in my lower right back.
I don't have tingling or numbness in my arms or legs just alot of pain when trying to get out of bed, once I'm up I move around ok with very little pain.
I tried laying on the floor with legs elevated last night like you mentioned and after an hour when I tried to get up the pain was terrible.
I finally rolled over and pulled myself up on my knees while holding on to a sofa and was having very sharp pain the whole time.
When I finally got on my feet the pain went away.
That's the first time in my life that I've had trouble standing up so that has me worried.
