Buzzzzzz

Old Mossy Horns
Years of keeping up with the pines, clearing areas for habitat, border areas of trees, pasture, blackberry fields and here it is, July, and I am serenaded by the mating "buzz" of the woodcock in addition to the quail.

I've seen a bunch of woodcock out here during season, but I never knew if they were local or just passing through.

Apparently they're thick enough now they're right outside the house.

Huzzah!

I hear some claim that they're only passing through but I've seen enough to think that they aren't, and do in fact breed here.

I see them all the time after sunset in the winter while hunting. Really neat to hear them fly skyward, then helicopter down all the while singing out their mating call til they touch down.

Below are some things I found interesting about them.
