Since this is frequently asked question for new people to NC, feel free to add any local restrictions on rifle use for deer:

Cabarrus County
  • Take deer with a centerfire rifle, except from a permanent or portable stationary stand at least nine feet above ground level and with the written permission of the landowner or lessee in one’s possession.

Camden
  • Hunt deer with a rifle, except from a stand eight feet high located on land owned or leased by the hunter or on another’s land with the owner’s permission.
To discharge or cause to be discharged any firearm within one-half mile of any public or private school, toward any public or private school, or to cause any projectile discharged from a firearm to enter any public or private school grounds for any reason

Chowan

  • To hunt with a centerfire rifle, unless the barrel of the rifle is at least eight feet above ground level.

Currituck

During the Regular Gun Deer Season in that portion of Poplar Branch Township on the Outer Banks, there is an open season for hunting or taking deer of either sex using only shotguns, bow and arrow, and blackpowder firearms.

Gates

  • HHunt with or possess a centerfire rifle or pistol in that part bordered to the north by U.S. 158, to the west by S.R. 1403/1400, to the south by S.R. 1404 and to the east by N.C. 32. It is also unlawful for any person to discharge or cause to be discharged a centerfire rifle or pistol toward Merchants Mill Pond State Park, or to cause any projectile to enter the park property for any reason.

It isn't hard. County by County. Know what county you're hunting in. Some have rules that you have to be in a tree stand. Mecklenburg is the only place you can't use a rifle.

It isn't like Indiana where they have funny laws about cartridges. It isn't like Wisconsin or Minnesota where there's a state highway that defines "Rifle/Shotgun."

Did you know if inline muzzleloader are legal in Mecklenburg during all the guns season or just the 2 weeks of the "primitive weapon season"

Thank you

Way it reads just the blackpowder season.

Not sure why they won’t allow them during the general season but the law doesn’t seem to

Usually they enforce the "except that a muzzleloading rifle may be used during the primitive weapons season part."
That's what my long time friends that live and hunt over there tell me.

A good, 20 ga. Rifled slug barrel and TSS sabot slugs are almost as good as a rifle. Out to 200 yards is what one fellow can shoot, anyway.

You only live once.
It don't cost but a nickel more to go first class.

You could easily set up a 12 ga for buckshot.
Crossbow ?
Just spitballing ideas. You have plenty of time before the general firearms season over there.(2 weekends before Thanksgiving)
I hope you find something that makes you happy, happy, happy !

Saddle mount with scope on a smooth bore shooting rifled slugs will get you to 75 yards not problem. Killed a many a deer with that set up.
